Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information HanRead ("we", "us", "our") collects when you use the HanRead application (the "Service"), how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

We collect the following categories of information:

• Account information — your email address and password (stored as a secure hash), or, if you sign in with Google, the basic profile information Google shares with us (name, email, avatar).
• Profile information — display name, avatar, language interests, HSK level, and text-to-speech preferences you choose to set.
• Learning activity — the texts you read, words you look up or mark as known/learning, grammar explanations and word comparisons you request, and flashcard/study progress.
• Social features — friend connections, your friend code, and profile visibility settings if you use the friends feature.
• Technical data — device and usage information such as browser type, log data, and locally stored session tokens needed to keep you signed in.

• To provide, operate, and maintain the Service (e.g. reading, translation, grammar, and flashcard features).
• To generate AI-powered explanations, translations, and word comparisons.
• To let you connect with friends and share reading progress, if you choose to.
• To remember your preferences (such as theme and text-to-speech voice).
• To maintain the security of your account and the Service.
• To communicate with you about your account or changes to the Service.

Some features (grammar explanations, translations, word comparisons, and text-to-speech) send the relevant text to third-party AI and speech providers in order to generate a response. We also use Google Sign-In for authentication if you choose that option. These providers process the data solely to return a result to the Service and are not authorized to use it for their own purposes.

Grammar explanations and word comparisons may be cached and reused to answer the same question for other learners more quickly. This shared cache does not include your account information.

We use your browser's local storage (not cookies) to keep you signed in and to remember your display preferences, such as light/dark theme. This data stays on your device and is cleared when you sign out.

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with the service providers described above (to operate the Service), with other users to the extent you choose to make information visible (e.g. a public profile or friend connection), or when required by law.

We retain your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and associated personal data at any time on our data deletion page.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information. You can update most of your profile information directly from the Profile page, or submit a deletion request to make one.

The Service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date above when we do, and material changes will be communicated within the Service.
